Canet-en-Roussillon means a long sandy beach, an easy-going seafront and a family resort. Port-Vendres, 20 minutes' drive away, is the rocky Côte Vermeille and a fishing port that hasn't given in to mass tourism. Le France is one of the addresses right on the quay: a west-facing terrace, perfect for summer evenings when the low light bathes the harbour in shades of orange and gold.

In the evening, Le France's bar takes centre stage: carefully made house cocktails, sangria, local Banyuls and Collioure wines, craft beers. The terrace comes alive and the tables fill up. It's the kind of place where you come for an aperitif and end up staying for dinner without having planned it. From Canet, it's an easy night out and a welcome change from the usual crowded beaches.
